Vesser barricades the gorge to keep McCabe in his camp while Palmer continues on to Denver via another branch. The movie's most touching moment comes in the aftermath of Yorke's reintroduction to Jefferson. Before he's nabbed we get a chance to witness Johnson's legendary skills as a horseman in a thunderous sequence in which himself, Carey Jr. The threats of the Civil War have been replaced by those of Apache Indians. The cavalrymen rescue all of the children unharmed, though Colonel Yorke is wounded by an arrow that he orders Jeff to remove. In 1968 I took a small group of students to Lincoln Center to see Cobb as King Lear. McGuinness died in December 1950 just four weeks after the film's premiere in November.

Beneath all this, there must be a plot--though it really was slow and didn't seem to get going for a very, very long time. Carlos is waylaid on his journey and seriously wounded. When he enters the camp saloon to bring the men back to work, one of McCabe's agitators sparks a brawl over not being paid. Through it all Kirby and Kathleen though separated for years fall back into love and decide that it's time to give it another try. El Malo, notorious Mexican bandit, forces the Mayor of Sierra Blanca, Seth Landport, to open the safe and turn over to him 2,000 pesos, which the bandit gives a promissory note for to the Mayor.
